Every winter, the same question lands in our WhatsApp inbox: “Should we book the Tent City, or is there a good Rann Utsav Tent City alternative nearby?”
The honest answer is that neither option is better for everyone. The official Tent City at Dhordo is a polished, all-inclusive festival package. Private tents in the villages around Dhordo give you more freedom and can cost less for families and groups — but quality varies a lot, and you handle more of the planning yourself.
This guide compares both, using the official 2026-27 Tent City tariff, so you can decide with real numbers instead of sales pitches. And yes, we’ll tell you when the Tent City is the smarter pick.
Quick Answer: Which Is Better?
- Choose the official Tent City if it’s your first visit, you’re arriving by train or flight without a car, and you want meals, transfers, sightseeing and cultural evenings handled in one booking.
- Choose a private tent if you’re a family or group of 4+, you’re driving your own car or hiring a cab, you want flexible check-in and check-out, or the Tent City is sold out on your dates.

What “Private Tents” Near Dhordo Actually Means
“Private tents” is a broad label. It covers family-run camps, village resorts and branded tent properties in and around Dhordo, Patgar and Hodka. They are independent of the official Tent City.
Two things to know:
- The name “Tent City” is used loosely. Several private camps and reseller websites use “Tent City” or “Rann Utsav” in their names. That doesn’t make them bad, but it does mean you should check exactly which property you’re paying for.
- Standards vary widely. Some private tents have AC, attached bathrooms with hot water and proper dining.

When the Tent City Is the Better Choice
We run a private tent property, and we’d still recommend the Tent City if:
- It’s your first Rann Utsav and you want the full festival atmosphere in one place
- You don’t have a car — the fixed Bhuj transfers and group sightseeing save real money and hassle
- You want zero planning — meals, programmes and visits are all scheduled
- Large cultural shows and on-site activities matter more to you than privacy
- You’re travelling with elderly relatives who prefer everything within one campus
When a Private Tent Is the Better Rann Utsav Tent City Alternative
A private tent makes more sense if:
- You’re a family or group — per-tent pricing usually beats per-person packages
- You’re driving your own car or hiring a cab, so included transfers don’t help you
- You want your own schedule — an unhurried sunrise, a late full-moon walk, or a later check-out
- The Tent City is sold out on full moon, Diwali, Christmas or New Year dates
- You’re only staying one night and don’t need a full sightseeing package
- You prefer a quieter village setting over a large festival campus
- You’re combining the White Rann with Bhuj, Dholavira or Mandvi on your own route

7 Questions to Ask Before Booking Any Private Tent
- Is the rate per tent or per person, and does it include GST?
- Which meals are included? Are Jain or special meals available?
- Is the tent AC or non-AC? Is the bathroom attached, with hot water?
- How far is the property from the White Rann sunset point, by road?
- Do you help with the White Rann entry permit, or should we apply ourselves?
- What are the check-in, check-out and cancellation terms?
- Can you share real, recent photos of the exact tent category we’re booking?
A good property will answer all seven quickly and clearly.
About the permit: entry to the White Rann is controlled because it’s close to the international border. Permits are available online at rannpermit.gujarat.gov.in or at the Bhirandiyara checkpost on the Bhuj–Dhordo road. Queues there can be long in December and January, so applying online in advance is easier. Whichever stay you choose, confirm whether the permit is included in your booking.

FAQs
Is there a good alternative to the Rann Utsav Tent City?
Yes. Private tents and village camps around Dhordo, Patgar and Hodka are the main alternatives. They suit families, groups and self-drive travellers best. Quality varies, so check meals, bathrooms, distance and permit help before booking.
2. Is the Rann Utsav Tent City worth the price?
For first-time visitors without a car, often yes. The per-person package includes meals, Bhuj transfers, a White Rann visit and cultural programmes. For families of four or more who are driving, a private tent can cost less overall.
How much does the Rann Utsav Tent City cost in 2026-27?
Official base rates start at ₹6,300 per person for one night in a Non-AC Swiss Cottage, excluding taxes. Full moon and festive dates carry extra charges. Check the official packages page for your exact dates.
Are private tents cheaper than the Tent City?
Often, especially for groups, because most private tents charge per tent rather than per person. Add meals, transport and permit costs before comparing, as these may not be included.
Do private tent guests need a White Rann permit?
Yes, visitors to the White Rann need an entry permit. You can apply online at rannpermit.gujarat.gov.in or at the Bhirandiyara checkpost. Ask your property whether they help arrange it.
What if the Tent City is sold out on full moon dates?
Full moon, Diwali and year-end dates sell out first. Private tents near Dhordo are the closest alternative. Book as early as you can, since good private options also fill up on these dates.
Can I attend Rann Utsav if I don’t stay at the Tent City?
You can visit the White Rann with a valid permit while staying elsewhere. Access to the Tent City’s own shows, dining and activity areas is generally for its package guests, so confirm directly with the Tent City if that matters to you.
